INSIGHTS: Design & Motif
The simple geometry of the Swiss flag lends itself to a variety of themes.
• Because the flag is square and the design is symmetrical it can be hung from any side and it will read correctly.
• Deconstructed, it consists of 5 white squares creating the cross, 4 red squares in each corner, and 4 red rectangles at the end of each cross arm. 13 elements.
• It is simple to reproduce at any scale.
I am using this motif as a structure for some of my personal observations of Switzerland.

INSIGHTS: Switzerland as Global Corporation.
In advertising and on packaging the Swiss flag is as recognizable as any corporate logo. It is used in the promotion and marketing of tourism, to promote chocolate, agricultural & dairy products, a wide range of manufactured goods, and various design services (graphic, interior, architectural, construction, etc.).
In Haute Valais there is a sign using the Swiss flag motif promoting Zermatt. Each square represents an element of tourism; a skier, a climber, VTT, hiker, etc. Also included are the edelweiss, a bouquetin (or steinbock), and the Cervin (or Matterhorn).
Watches
Around the world, the watch is synonymous with Switzerland. SWISS MADE is the mark of high quality, design refinement, precision, and durability. I have been awe struck by the diversity of brand names, designs, and product lines. I have studied the advertising, photography, and the design of watches. Drawing them leads to an appreciation for their complexity, miniaturization, use of materials, and design harmonies.
INSIGHTS: La Suisse en tant que corporation globale.
Dans la publicité et sur les emballages, le drapeau Suisse est reconnaissable au même titre que n’importe quel autre logo :
• Il est utilisé aussi bien pour la promotion ou le marketing touristique, que pour promouvoir la vente du chocolat, de produits laitiers et ceux de l’agriculture, ainsi que de nombreux articles manufacturés. Il est également présent dans les domaines proches du design tels que : les arts graphiques, l’architecture, la construction, etc.
• Dans le Haut-Valais, le motif du drapeau Suisse sert à promouvoir Zermatt. Chaque carré représente alors un aspect touristique : le ski, la varappe, le VTT, la randonnée, ou encore un edelweiss, un bouquetin, le Cervin, etc.
Les Montres
Partout dans le monde, la montre est synonyme de Suisse. « Swiss made » est perçu comme un signe de haute qualité, de design de grande finesse, de précision et de durabilité. J’ai été très frappé par la diversité des marques, des designs, et des lignes de produit. J'ai étudié la publicité, la photographie et le design des montres. Les dessiner m’a amené à apprécier leur complexité, leur miniaturisation, et à admirer l’harmonie entre le design et les matériaux utilisés.

INSIGHTS: All are welcome to visit and vacation in Switzerland. Some are welcome to reside and/or work. It is possible to achieve citizenship in one’s lifetime. But to be Swiss is something that requires several generations to achieve. Those who can trace their family’s history in Switzerland for many generations make up the heart of the cross.
On another level, the use of this motif reflects upon the topography of Switzerland. Mountains form barriers while valleys wind and twist through them. Until the 20th century, this topography helped to create and preserve cultural diversity, isolated the inhabitants from external influences, and put barriers against domination by foreigners.
INSIGHTS: Tous sont bienvenus en Suisse pour passer des vacances. D’autres personnes peuvent s’y installer et/ou y travailler. L’on peut même obtenir la citoyenneté Suisse à certaines conditions. Mais, « être Suisse » est quelque chose qui ne peut être atteint qu’après plusieurs générations. Ceux qui peuvent remonter dans l’histoire de leur famille en Suisse, sur plusieurs générations, sont au cœur même de la croix.
Sur un tout autre niveau, l’utilisation du labyrinthe reflète la topographie de ce pays. Les montagnes forment des remparts, tandis que les vallées serpentent autour d’elles.
Jusqu’au 20ème siècle, cette topographie a permis de créer et d’aider à préserver une diversité culturelle, tenant les habitants à l’écart d’influences extérieures, et les protégeant contre la domination étrangère.

INSIGHTS: The inspiration for « Suisse Carrée » is found in the life of the mountain people. Every chalet d’alpage has a wall of split wood precisely stacked to maximize the space under the chalet’s eaves. This traditional activity is a folk art form and a cultural icon. It illustrates attention to detail, economy and thrift, and respect for the value of natural resources.
INSIGHTS: Mon inspiration trouve sa source dans la vie montagnarde. L’on voit souvent contre une façade de chalet d’alpage des bûches de bois empilées avec le plus grand soin et précision, afin d’optimaliser l’espace sous l’avant-toit.
Cette activité traditionnelle est une forme d’art populaire et une icône culturelle. Cet exemple illustre tout particulièrement bien : l’attention au détail, l’économie de moyens et la parcimonie, ainsi que le respect des ressources naturelles qui sont de véritables valeurs.
